Teen Pregnancy Prevention
According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy:
- ½ of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned: about 3 million each year
- 3 in 10 girls in the United States get pregnant at least once by age 20.
- 6 in 10 pregnancies to women aged 20-24 are unplanned
- 6 in 10 teens who have had sex wish they would have waited.
According to the Summary of 2011 Preliminary Birth Data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) as presented by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy regarding overall teen birth rates:
The teen birth rate for girls age 15-19 decreased 8% between 2010 and 2011, from 34.2 births per 1,000 to 31.3 per 1,000. This is following a 10% decline between 2009 and 2010.
- Teen birth rates are at their lowest levels since NCHS began tracking teenage childbearing in the 1940’s.
- The teen birth rate for this age group declined 49% between 1991 and 2011.
- Between 2007 and 2011 alone, the teen birth rate dropped by 25%.
- The teen birth rate for all age groups and all racial/ethnic groups are at historic lows.
Giving Back Enterprises in conjunction with the Black Women Lawyers Foundation of Michigan are working with communities and bonding with professional athletes, concerned individuals and organizations to continue to address this critical societal need.
